Research interests

Cloning, purification and characterisation of human and viral enzymes involved in DNA replication and repair. (DNA polymerases, DNA primases, DNA exonucleases, thymidine kinases, deoxycytidine kinase, adenosine kinase, cytidine-uridine kinase, PD-ECGF/thymidine phosphorylase, uracil-DNA glycosylases, DNA-dependent ATPases, dUTPases, RNAseH, HIV-RT etc.)

Studies on natural and synthetic inhibitors of human and viral DNA synthesis and their use to control abnormal cell proliferation (cancer) and viral infections (HSV-1, HSV-2, HCV, simian Herpes B virus, etc.).

Design and characterisation of nucleoside, nucleotide and base analogs as substrate and non-substrate inhibitors of nucleoside kinases, UDG and human and viral polymerases. Their use in chemothearapy.

Search for DNA enzymes as possible targets of novel anticancer and antiviral drugs.

Study of the in vitro and in vivo effects of L-enantiomers of the naturally occurring D-nucleosides on cellular and viral (deoxy)ribonucleoside kinases with the aim to develop a novel approach to the chemotherapy of virus infections and cancer.
