Research

The platform MbMM intends to propose a synergistic and innovative approach to the study of human diseases, by combining the different perspectives provided by the available methodologies and thereby enhancing the skills of the individual Institutes.

The application of an integrated approach based on the combined use of different technologies and skills will be designed to accelerate the identification of new potential molecular targets involved in monogenic or multifactorial diseases and facilitate the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. During the project, the proposed methodological approach is applied and validated in two specific areas of research:

Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by a progressive degeneration of catecholaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and locus coeruleus. The main symptoms are resting tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia. Several studies are focused on genetic mutations that cause familial forms of the disease, the role of neuroinflammatory and exicotoxic mechanisms,  protein misfolding and others. The purpose of the MbMM platform is the integration of the methodological skills of the various institutions  (IBFM, IFC, IGM, IN, ITB), in order to investigate  mechanisms involved in PD.

Regenerative Medicine

The Regenerative Medicine (MR) is today a leading sector at the international level thanks to the research on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS). This technology, used by three CNR Institute among the MbMM platform (IGM, IN, IRGB), allows to obtain directly from patients cells with the same properties of the human embryonic stem cells, avoiding ethical issues and problem of rejection.
