Research Activity

Expertise – spectroscopy, microspectrofluorometry (UV-visible; conventional, via fiber optics); fluorescence, induced or natural (autofluorescence). Development of spectral fitting analysis procedures applied for the in situ, real time quali/quantitative analysis of biomolecules acting as endogenous fluorophores in biological substrates.

 

Aim – Set-up of minimally or non invasive diagnostic strategies in biomedicine, “label free”, based on the use of autofluorescence from endogenous fluorophores, acting as intrinsic biomarkers of biometabolic functions of cells, tissues and organs under normal, altered, pathological conditions (autofluorescence  optical biopsy).

 

Current interest – Greatly devoted to experimental hepatology to: i) improve the knowledge on the patophysiological mechanisms of hepatic stress and damage induced by ischemia/ reperfusion and/or lipid  accumulation, and on the progression of metabolic disorder to severe pathology (inflammation, fibrosis, hepatocarcinoma); ii) development of diagnostic procedures in real time, cost effective,  to support prescreening of the pathology degree to select patients to address to more advanced examination, and/or to follow up the response of the pathology to therapeutic interventions.

The autofluorescence analysis of liver tissue requires a direct contact, and can indicate organ functional alteration in surgery and transplantation, and is also considered to develop automatized, fast, label free, cost effective procedures for the histological analysis of liver biopsies, but entailing the same discomfort and risks for the collection of liver specimens. 

The serum endogenous fluorophores are promising for the set up of promising non invasive strategies   to analyze the functionality of liver and its ability to maintain metabolic homeostasis. The advantage of serum autofluorescence analysis depends on the functions carried out by liver to provide for the storage and mobilization into serum of vitamin A (retinol) e free fatty acids, along with their autofluorescence properties and their roles as mediators and regulators of protection or damaging responses to the induction of hepatic stress. Serum analysis fully meets the requirement in biomedicine as to the widening of serum panel diagnostic markers in hepatology, also to detect and monitor systemic metabolic alterations.
